Impossible conversation: Jesus and Nicodemus: YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN
by Terry ini am a member on new testament scholar bart ehrman's blog, and the professor is currently outlining a new book he is writing about false memory and the life of jesus.. an interesting post occurred today in which he gives an example of a very famous scripture,.
example of a false memory of jesus teaching i turn to a famous passage in the gospel of john, jesus dialogue with nicodemus (john 3:1-15).
nicodemus is said to be a jewish leader who comes up to jesus and affirms that jesus must come from god because of the great things that he said to have done.

Very interesting, I really enjoy these Bart Ehrman posts. I have to thank you terry for introducing his work to me. My wife and I bought several of his books recently and have really been loving reading and discussing them. his book, misquoting Jesus, is an amazing read that I'd recommend to anyone questioning the bible -

Witnesses don't discuss doctrine period. Even during the watchtower study or congregation "bible" study, doctrine isn't really discussed. Read the paragraph, ask the question, quick answer that is just rereading the paragraph, then move on. Ive been just sitting here thinking for about 5 minutes and I can't think of a single witness, under 30, that would even begin to know how to talk about anything more than elementary doctrine. -

I posted this in another thread... my hall had 198 in attendance. Congregation is 101 publishers. Slightly down from last year we had the prime time spot, not the late one. No one from the memorial invite campaign came per usual. No partakers, was told in the talk if you haven't partaken before you're not one of the anointed. Hall wasn't full, looked like what it does for c.o. Sunday talk. -

Worst Memorial Talk Ever!
by The Searcher ini honestly have never heard such claptrap being delivered in a memorial talk.. the speaker repeatedly put down the way other religions administered the bread & wine, and claimed that witnesses do it exactly as the bible describes.
oh yeah????.
he forgot to mention - when reading aloud 1 corinthians 11:25 - that after passing the bread, a full meal was to be shared, before the wine was passed around!

Just a few thoughts from the memorial I went to last night...the speaker never really explained what exactly the purpose of the memorial was, he kinda gave a 30 explanation but that was it. Most of the talk was about an earthly paradise, what kind of animals we would be playing with and how many houses we would have. Mention was made that we're going to have over 20 million in attendance! That was news to me. If you haven't partaken of the bread and the wine before you're not of the anointed. also news to me. My congregation is 101 publishers, we had 198 in attendance. Zero people came because of the invite work, which I think makes 4or 5 years since a single random person showed up because they got an invitation at their door. -

The Secret is out....but nobody cares

Welcome MrTheocratic! Your opening post describes witnesses in liberal, urban environments, which is exactly where I live. As someone who is still physically in, I can tell you, witnesses here don't know and don't care about doctrine. Sure we have a few zealots like you said but most are just social witnesses. So I totally see and agree with what you're saying. However I grew up in a rural, conservative environment, and witnesses there are completely different. When I go back to visit family, it's like going back in a time machine. The people there, for the most part, take the "truth" very seriously. -

Nature of the Word "Spiritual" Amongst Witnesses
by freemindfade ineven as an atheist i consider myself spiritual, always have, metaphysics and spiritual discussions about enlightenment and so on i find interesting, even if belief in a yhwh is not in me.
i want to propose this simple definition of the word "spiritual" among jehovah's witnesses.. spiritual = indoctrination or indoctrinated.
i have been told how i'm "just not a spiritual man".

sir82 100% right! Spirituality for a jw is all about what people see you doing. For guys trying to get promoted in the company you have to be "spirtual" what does that mean? The elders need to see your wt underlined, comment, out in service and be willing to clean toilets. That's what being spirtual means to them. -

Any ever use a different version of the NWT in the KH

I also use the Greek Interlinear Bible sometimes. If you're using anything but the "silver sword" you occasionally get some funny looks. Although, the c.o. did tell us during a talk, that we weren't sinning if we did use the old nwt. Apparently somebody had been saying it was a sin? So he cleared that up for us. -
